Daniel: You mean there were times when you were scared to fight?
Miyagi: Always scare. Miyagi hate fighting.
Daniel: Yeah, but you like karate.
Miyagi: So?
Daniel: So, karate’s fighting. You train to fight.
Miyagi: That what you think?
Daniel: [pondering] No.
Miyagi: Then why train?
Daniel: [thinks] So I won’t have to fight.
Miyagi: [laughs] Miyagi have hope for you.

excerpt from The Karate Kid

Even though we may know right from wrong…as a child we are pursuaded by many things to do the fun stuff or the crazy stuff, the bad stuff, the risky stuff.  But as aware adults, we hope to no longer be deluded by these things because we are wiser.

I’ve learned along the way, that sometimes, the nice thing isn’t always the coolest,…and I am tested.  I’ve found myself faced with the question of whether this path is worth fighting for? or should I just succumb to whatever it is that is fighting against my goals.  It can be lonely fighting the good fight…or whatever it is, we determine is worth fighting for.  We may find ourselves standing alone, lonely…insecure of what it is we are fighting for.  But just as you are about to give up, something happens.  That is, if you stick it out long enough….

If you do stand the test and stay true to your principles, you will eventually find yourself surrounded with better individuals who share your goals and intentions.  IT’s not something you will see happening, it’s much more subtle and beautiful than that.  It’s kind of like an overhwhelming warmth that you will begin to feel from certain people.  These are the people who will take note of your good deeds and kindness and when you’re in a position where you need help, these are the precise people who will lend that helping hand with very few or no questions asked.

Try asking the bully on the corner to help you out when you need it desparately… I gaurantee you, it’s not going to happen.  But ask the friend who bleeds for the underdog, and doesn’t follow the crowd but stands alone for the noble fight, and I promise you that if he/she doesn’t have the money, they will come up with a million other ways to try and help you.   At least, that is what I have learned.

We should handpick the people around us just as we would handpick the brightest, strongest and most amazing flowers to place in a vase in the center of our tables!!  xo
